What Tahir-ul-Qadri is up to?

Thursday, December 20, 2012 - FOR the last few months, the well-known Islamic researcher and founder of Minhajul Quran movement Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri is making headlines for his out-of-box approach to the challenges facing the country. The leading religious thinker is, though, speaking in the context of the forthcoming general elections and his opponents would call it a routine political activity to influence the outcome of the elections but saner elements cannot differ from his analysis of the complex situation confronting people of Pakistan at this juncture.

There are reasons to listen to Dr. Qadri when he says state of Pakistan is more important than politics (Save State not Politics) and that only genuine reforms can help extricate the country from the existing mess. One may differ from him when says that elections without reforms would be a disaster for the country, which implies that the general elections should be delayed till reformation of the society. However, fuller analysis of his viewpoint would be possible only when he returns to the country to address a public meeting at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore where, as per his own announcement, he will unfold a reform agenda. One can hardly doubt his assertions as his pronouncements are based on the rich knowledge, study and research and he is fully motivated to serve the nation and the Ummah. This is also evident from the popularity that his movement has attained especially among educated people and among women as well that matter much in any effort to bring about a change. His ideas are quite relevant to the prevailing situation. Anyhow, one must wait and watch what he has to deliver on the much-trumpeted December 23 address which is being compared by his followers and supporters with the rousing reception Benazir Bhutto received on her return to Pakistan in April 1986.
