Free the World

After so much philosophical work we still as society always keep to certain systems. It’s like we don’t want to progress as humans.
Here’s why I say this. Inspired by the US Elections I was wondering what would it be like if an average Joe were to stand to form his own party and try to win the elections. But I realised he cannot. The reason being is that the US, a system which prides itself to be the “best” democracy, does not allow this to be possible. It is a closed bi party system; meaning only the two parties and their presidential candidates can go through and win. No other party can succeed. Which is a similar closed system in the UK; only the three main parties ever win elections (to explain it in its simplest terms).
Therefore, can we call democracy democracy if the average Joe cannot stand for election and have a chance at win?
