Major MQM move to support Dr Qadri sparks debate

ISLAMABAD: The MQM appeared to have made a major shift in its policy when its top leaders announced first on Tweeter and then through the Rabita Committee that they will support Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri on Dec 23 when he would address a public meeting in Lahore.

The support was confirmed by Mohammed Anwar (Anwar Bhai) and MQM’s media spokesman Wasay Jalil who both said it was true that the MQM had expressed support for Dr Qadri’s meeting in Lahore.

MQM leader Altaf Hussain in a statement put on the official MQM web site said the “ the PAT jalsa in Lahore will become a milestone in abolishing feudal system from the country.” The MQM statement said: The Co-ordination Committee of the MQM has appealed to the people for participating in the jalsa being organized by the Pakistan Awami Tehreek at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore on 23rd December and make it a huge success.

The committee said that PAT Chairman Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri is also making struggle to abolish the rotten feudal system and the culture of hereditary politics in the country like Altaf Hussain.

The committee said that the jalsa being held by the PAT would prove to be a milestone in eliminating the feudal system and dynastic politics and urged on the public to become a part of the struggle by attending the jalsa.

An intense debate started on Tweeter after their disclosures as it was immediately interpreted as a move which could signal MQM’s support for a delay or postponement of the elections as Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has openly declared that he wanted to bring down the present system as it had failed to deliver.

In his response Anwar Bhai said on Tweeter: “MQM wants elections as much as people want to see democracy flourishing and taking roots but also wants demolition of feudalism.” In another message Anwar Bhai said: “Siyasat ya Riasat, debate Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has initiated is worth pondering over!”

MQM leader Wasay Jalil ‘s Tweet said: “ MQM announces support for the PAT Jalsa in Lahore and Sindh on 23rd December. Other comments which started in a flood included some who said Tahir-ul-Qadri says Save Country not Politics so MQM is the second party to join the Country Savers.

Another comment said: “A secular party (MQM) is supporting a religious party (Dr Qadri’s).” This comment hinted at the Foreign Office statement, which had called the MQM as a secular party.
